So you’re through, Wesley thought. Did you really think you could out-sorcer a sorcerer? Arrogance.
Though he strained to see, no softness flickered behind the eyes of his love; he could feel, barely, the caress of tiny hands, cold, turning him numb. His eyes closed, and she transformed into Lilah in her glasses and pigtails. In her expensive high heels with no stockings. In her sleek, sharp business suit, the short skirt just a little harsh, with her lacy red bra thrown over her shoulder in contempt.
She had thought she could love him, perhaps. But she didn’t know how.

Lilah stumbled down the hall of the hotel, mind over matter, nearly delusional from the pain that was searing her gut.
In her mind, she smiled back at Wesley’s five-o’clock-shadowed, lust-filled smirk, his narrowed eyes betraying the wretchedness of his numb ambiguity. He would look through her, concentrating his gaze on a point just distant enough that he could ignore her corruption – and his own arrogance.
She hadn’t meant to love him; well, she hadn’t intended for him to know it. And he sure as shit hadn’t loved her. He hadn’t even tried. Still, she wished she’d loved him better.
