There was an old story from Earth-that-was about the taste of a cookie filling a man with powerful joy and childhood recollections. Mal thought of this story as he entered the cargo bay and smelled the cattle.
If he closed his eyes he could almost imagine himself back on his momma's ranch. He felt a desire to run, not from something or to something, but just for the sheer joy of it. He smiled, recalling a life full of simple pleasures.
The girl's screams broke his reverie, bringing him back to his present and somewhat more complicated life.
