PROMISE TO A LADY

Jane stood in her bedroom, hugging herself in excitement. Sunday and her birthday! Now she was seventeen, everything was possible. Lots of girls married at her age. Next year she could be his wife!
She looked in the mirror. So perhaps she wasn’t as pretty as some of the girls he knew, like Cecily, but last week when they’d met, he’d been so shy and sweet and caring.
There was a confident step on the path; it didn’t sound like him but she ran to the window, looked out into the garden and there was William who lived next door, come to escort her to church as promised. And as he looked up – he grinned.
