Nice, touching moment. It's certainly something that would have been nice to see in the show, but I can't imagine it ever would have been. While I totally agree with you about Giles' response to this conversation, I can't actually picture Xander starting it. He always seemed too ashamed of his family situation to actually draw attention to it. It was a good read though.
