Riley watched in silence as Buffy turned away and walked towards the hospital room. He tried to stop the feelings of rejection that washed over him but it was getting harder every day.
It certainly didn’t help that everyone but him had known about her Mom. Of course he understood why Giles, Xander, Willow, and even Tara had known before him. But Spike? In what universe was it necessary for Spike to know what was going on in Buffy's life before him?
He really did understand the need Buffy had to take care of her Mom. How could he not? And if she would only let him he would be glad to help her. But for some reason she couldn't or wouldn't let him see her pain. However, he'd be willing to bet that if he were Angel, Buffy would lean on him in a heartbeat and let him take care of her. Unfortunately for him, he wasn’t Angel. And he knew how self-pitying that sounded but sometimes the fact that he wasn't dark enough for her got to him.
After living over a year in Angel’s shadow, he had hoped that someday as their relationship grew that Buffy would let him in. Start to need him, lean on him if only just a little. So far that hadn't happened. Even now she still didn't need him. Soon he would have to face the fact that she would never need him, not like she did Mr. Billowy Coat King of Pain. Eventually even naive Iowa farm boys have to face reality.
But not today.
Today he would keep hoping for someday.-
