Earth to earth,
ashes to ashes,
dust to dust...
the words just kept echoing around in her mind.
Echoing.
Echoing.
Driving her insane.
Finally.
When he died, the spear penetrating his frame as if it were still moving through thin air, she'd been looking at him. She'd seen it all. From a distance.
And she'd been unable to stop it. Unable to help him. Unable to tell him goodbye.
She'd simply screamed his name, and in that millisecond, that half of a moment, she could swear, he'd looked at her. Right at her, and smiled.
At her.
For her.
As if he were saying: It's all right.
Only it wasn't. Because now, without him, she was alone. She ached. She could feel the edges of every break, every splintered shard of her soul.
He was the only thing that had held her pieces together, and now, without him, they shuddered and shifted and waited for the very next breeze to send them into the air.
Earth to earth,
ashes to ashes,
dust to dust...
the words just kept echoing around in her mind.
