Characters/Pairing: Buffy/Angel

It ate into his mind, that dream of their wedding.

Partly, of course, because it was so obviously her dream. The white dress with the ruffles, the church ceremony, all the frills and lavish touches that girls these days wanted when they were married. Angel didn't care about things like that, beyond making her happy at least. Most of it was from after his time. He'd watched customs come and go, and probably would long after she was gone.

But only partly. Of course marrying him would destroy her. He knew that. She couldn't live her life in the darkness with him. She couldn't be a Slayer married to a vampire. She couldn't live with him till death did them part unless it was hers. All that had been obvious to him before the mayor pointed it out; he was only trying to help her hold on to the dream until she realized, inevitably, what a lie it was. And yes, he supposed, trying to hold onto it a little himself.

Except...why fire? Why did she only burst into flame when he brought her out into the light? That was where she belonged. She was a girl, a human girl, and it was what she deserved. To live her life in the daytime, with someone who could live in it with her. How could it be the sun that would destroy her?

It never occurred to him to wonder why it left him unharmed.
