Growing up she knew. Lying was bad . It was usually smarter just to tell the truth anyways. But that was back when she knew for sure what was the truth and what was a lie.

She knows these thoughts and memories don't belong to her, so how can she tell if they are true or not? Some of them she hopes so hard aren't true, aren't real, are just made up. But who would want to make such things up? Only someone crazier than her.
Still she hopes.

Then she wonders.

Is hope just another way of lying to yourself?

River woke up in a cold sweat, screaming again.

What she was feeling was fear - a distressing emotion aroused by impending danger, real or imagined.

It manifested in several ways: nightmares, random outbursts, phobias, most recently agoraphobia - an abnormal fear of being in crowds or public places.

In Greek, agoraphobia means fear of the market place. Many people would consider that an imagined danger.

River knew better. In the Alliance, the marketplace was all powerful, everywhere, could come at you from out of the blue: hurt you, poke, poke, poke into your brain, kill you, or make you a killer.

The second one is chillingly good. I keep using that word for some reason... oh well.

Ooo - a stab at rampant consumerism and big-business control! I really liked the second one.

Excellent work. I really liked your River-voice in the second one. The terrified hyper-intellectualism was spot on for her character.

I really love both of them. The first one is just depressing in a way because it kind of rings true. The second one is depressing in a whole other way. In a fearful depression big business way. I love you. :)
