Buffy loved him, everyone did. Jonathan was just so hot and unspeakably cool in a suave James Bond sort of way, but there was a small part of her that almost resented him. He kicked serious demon ass, but that was supposed to be her job. She was the Slayer, she should be the short plucky world saving person, not him. Now he was getting the award for class protector. He deserved it, but Buffy knew it should be her. She clutched her shinny umbrella to her chest and tried to smile at Jonathan as she handed it to him.

Well done. It hints at Buffy's slayer ability seeing through Jonathan's spell, just enough for her to realize she should be doing what he is -- which would naturally result in a bit of jealousy.

I've had the opportunity to be both sidekick and hero; being hero gives you better stories to tell, but it really isn't all that much fun at the time.
