Where the Day Takes You, What the Day Takes From You

She feels the day approaching even without looking at the calendar. The echo of Tara’s death remains there every year. She once heard Xander refer to it as “the day Buffy got shot” and she almost wished that Warren wasn’t the only one she’d flayed alive.

But mostly it’s never discussed, swallowed up by her friends’ terror of what her grief had made her do. Terror unmixed with sympathy or understanding, terror vitiated only by their belief that Kennedy in Willow’s bed equals sorrow gone from her heart, as if Slayer strength and a pierced tongue were enough to wipe out loving eyes and a spirit whose gentleness was more powerful than any Slayer ever born.

So she stays in Brazil and she never sees her friends anymore. It’s better that way. They email and they chat on the phone and they express regret at being “too busy” to bridge the miles, but the months go by and she’s sure they all know that the excuses are exactly that. She remains with Kennedy because it’s easier, that's all. The lukewarm substitute she knows being less trouble than trying out new candidates for the job of keeping her just this side of too lonely to bear it. Anyway, Kennedy’s sweet enough; she gets what she’s looking for and doesn’t peer below the surface.

And the day passes, as it always does.

The End.

Thanks. I did one of those 100 icon challenges for the movie "Mildred Pierce", one of my favorite Joan movies.
