D’Hoffryn considered himself a connoisseur of pain and his girls were all such fine cooks. The Anyanka of old had been coldly single-minded and creatively vicious. The pain she caused always tasted strongly of blood. Halfrek, on the other hand, liked to start slow and small and work her way up to that final, crushing blow. Her creations were always flavored with her victims’ helplessness and dispar. Ms. Rosenberg’s vengeance was like nothing he’d ever tasted. It was simply an indiscriminate, flailing rage. Delicious. He wanted her. She’d turned him down before, but soon she’d make her pain for him.
