Title: The Drug I'm Needing
Author: Maharet83
Rating: PG
Word Count: 650
Prompt: 42 Once More With Feeling
Characters/Pairing: Dawn, Buffy
A/N: Kind of a 'deleted scene' from the episode. No clue how to write music(and I'm sure most of you've got no clue how to read music), so this is based off a song by PJ Harvey called 'The Slow Drug'.

(song can be found here I think. If not, then tryhere :)

The Drug I'm Needing

Dawn was cheerily walking, almost skipping even, a wide grin permanently plastered across her face. She was so excited to tell the gang what had happened. Singing about math, who'd see that coming? They might have their demons and books, but this was something completely different. They'd sure listen to her now. The pure excitement rushed through her body, her fingers were tingling even, and she started rhythmically tapping them against her thighs as she quickly made her way towards the magic box.

"Huh, a guy with a keyboard in the middle of the street. That's weird," she remarked to herself, walking past him and nodding her head ever so slightly to the rhythm of the music. Picking up her pace, eager to share her story, the music seemed to follow her, electric thumpings in the background. A single note setting the pace, her lips parted and out came a somber tune, seemingly flowing straight from her heart.

(tune - PJ Harvey - The Slow Drug)
"Blue now is the colour
Love the drug I'm needing
Got to keep this feeling"

Her fists clenched ever so slightly, the bubbly feeling subsiding some, giving way to the doubts that demanded their space. What if it wasn't something they'd be interested in. Not like cheerful tunes spelled the end of the world. No, they'd have to be. This was special, new, she reassured herself.

"With the headlights burning
They'll listen now I have something
Got to keep this feeling"

She was past the man with the keyboard now, nearing the Magic Shop. Still the music seemed no further away than before, connecting with the black hole festering in her heart, the pit of her stomach. No! Maybe they'd include her in the research. This once. She'd been the one who was there after all. She would know stuff, could prove herself if they'd let her. She could totally help.

"Watching out the windows
Watch them all trade blows
Soon I might be mourning"

She needed to help. Her steps grew less decisive, a couple of corners left before the shop would be in sight. The gang would all be there, probably researching the latest doomsday device or whatever.

"Still the question lingers
I twist it round my fingers
Can you see me falling?"

Busy band of warriors, no place for kids. Hrrm! She's no kid! She'd grown up, but they were all too preoccupied to even notice. Anya patting her on the head, patronizing her whenever she could. She was way smarter than her. Anya couldn't even keep track of the stuff in her shop, she concluded to herself, gaining some of her stride back.

"See this lost girl falling
Losing out on something
Lost the drug I'm needing"

Her sister would have to listen to her in any case. Usually school would just be too damned 'normal' for her. Since she blew up the High School, (which mom didn't even ground her for!), the not-so-Hellmouthy variant she went to just didn't measure up. No ghouls in the basement or anything. Still, she'd have to care about this. Mom would have. She swallowed hard, choking back the lump forming in her throat, forcing the memories back.

"Arrows that you're twisting
My thought keep on churning
Will you be here in the morning?"

She sure would. They'd figure it out together, team Summers and gang. A spring in her step, a grin firmly re-attached onto her face, the door in sight now.

"With the headlights burning
Looking forward to something
Something that I'm needing"

She felt like squealing, such exciting news to tell.

"Still the question lingers
I twist it round my fingers
Will you hear me calling?"

The music faded away, replaced by silence. Pressing the handle down and pushing the door inwards, she was greeted by the familiar jingle of the bell, bringing the gang into sight. They were camped out around the research table, books sprawled across in heaps. "Oh my god. You will never believe what happened at school today," she cheerily announced.

"Everybody started singing and dancing?" Buffy barely gave her a look.

"She could totally help" made me laugh out loud, you write a very convincing Dawn. I'm not familiar with the song, but the lyrics match with the situation quite well. Good job!
