Characters/Pairing: Giles

Was Not/Was

There was a teary-eyed girl to comfort after her big sister ran away. There were sticky fingers to keep away from his precious volumes. There was a Slayer to be made to focus when she wanted to rant about a sweater-stealing little brat.

But it never happened. Buffy explains there were only reality twisting monks who gave them this gift, this different life.

Later, Giles enters his flat, looks about at familiar books, carefully chosen art, personal trinkets. This is home, a place he remembers filling with comfort and memories and now he wonders if he's ever been here before.

Ooh. When you put it that way, the whole Monks creating memories thing is extra creepy and sort of a violation of self. Excellent work.

what I always think is creepy with the whole monks creating memories thing is that the comics reflect the memories - if you look at some of the "origins" stories in omnibus 1, Dawn's there - in a time she clearly wasn't around yet in the series...

So, in essence, they missed with our memories too? :)

Wow. This is good. The whole monk memory thing does sort of make you wonder about your own memories... Giles probably would have been quite freaked out.

Love this take on the prompt and Giles' ponderings at the end.

I like this. You did a great job of showing how unstable their whole lives were. That last line was just the right mix of poignant and disturbing. Well done!

I'd never quite thought of that aspect of finding out about the implanted memories. Very insightful!

What an interesting realization for him to have! [And of course it would be Giles who would have it - perfect.]
