All Good Things

The morning of Inara’s departure was cold and rainy, as if the sky above was weeping with Kaylee. An icy wind whipped through the carbo bay, but Kaylee was too lost in misery to notice.

"I’m gonna miss ya so much, ‘Nara. Ain’t there no way you an’ Mal..." Kaylee sobbed softly.

"I’ll miss you too, Kaylee." Inara clasped Kaylee’s icy hands tightly and pressed a brief, cool, kiss to the young mechanics’ cheek. "Wo ai na, mei-mei," she whispered, close to Kaylee’s ear.

"Mistress Serra? I am Jacque and this is Mikhail. We are here to assist you in your return to House Madrassa." The two swai young men bowed their heads deferentially towards Inara.

"Xie-xie, gentleman." Inara gently released Kaylee’s hands. "Thank you, Mrs. Tam, for your help. I will take my leave now." She did not look back as she departed with swish of satin and silk.

Kaylee stood still as stone. She knew she should be in the engine room. Cap’n wanted to leave Shinon, and Inara as soon as possible. Hun dan hadn’t even bothered to say goodbye.

"She will return, but not for the reason you think." River slipped up beside Kaylee, silent as a cat.

Kaylee jumped, and without thinking, she buried her head in River’s shoulder and let the scalding tears flow. She felt River’s arms tighten around her, and River’s slender hands smoothing her hair.

And does the 'Mrs Tam' mean that Kaylee and Simon are finally wed?
