Title Going Deeper
Author Bruttimabuoni
Rating G
Word Count 190
Prompt 112 (Stakes)
Characters/Pairing (if any) Buffy, Giles
“Why a stake? Come on, Giles - this isn’t the Dark Ages, we have many shiny and effective weapons these days. How come vamp slaying hasn’t moved on?”
“Well, now that’s a fascinating topic, Buffy. There are those who contend that the sheer power of belief gives the stake its power – all those centuries of tradition. Others discuss the symbolism of wood, the living material converted into a dead instrument dealing more death… And of course there’s the Katzenberg thesis which suggests a long-running enchantment, cast by a hugely powerful warlock sometime around 654AD (or 637 if you accept Brikci’s re-dating, but that’s extremely controversial), strong enough to affect all those who subsequently wield the weapon. And, of course, they’re really very cheap, which is always popular.
“I’m delighted you’re showing an interest in Slayer lore. Perhaps I could put together a bibliography for you so you can really get your teeth into this – some Slayers have contributed substantially to research, published articles…
“Buffy…?”
“Giles, see my face? Does it say ‘research, yay’? I don’t think so. Also, please try to remember that ‘Nobody knows’ is always a valid answer.”

Lovely. I'm on Giles' side on this though. Know your tools, Buffy.
