Title: The Academy
Author: Mierke
Fandom & Disclaimer: Firefly’s not mine, it’s Joss Whedon’s. I’m just borrowing his world and very thankful for the chance.
Pairing/Characters: Inara(/Mal)
Prompt: 170. Blue – Love
Words: 171
Rating: G
The academy had taught Inara a lot of things. It hadn’t just taught her proper etiquette and how to hold herself. It had also taught her how to hide her feelings behind a gentle exterior. It had taught her to look past the appearance of people and look at the beauty within. It had taught her to respect herself and the people around her.
She had never realized that it took something from her too. Not until she met Mal. It was only then that she discovered that her years of training had robbed her of something very important. She wasn’t able to recognize her own feelings, let alone admit to them, anymore. She was so trained in hiding them away, that she couldn’t even locate them herself.
She couldn’t do that to Mal. She couldn’t stick around, waiting for her feelings to come to the surface. Waiting on a moment she wasn’t even sure would come. He deserved more than that.
It broke her heart, but she had to leave.
