Characters/Pairing: Gunn/Fred

Gunn stood in the middle of his kitchen with his hands on his hips. A look of horror crossed his face as he stared at the mess he'd made. It was the most disgusting thing he had ever seen and that was saying a lot especially since he hunted monsters for a living. Large amounts of flour coated the floor a snowy white, busted egg shells lay across the counter, their contents dripping down the sides, while what had once been sausages were burned to the bottom of the pan. He'd wanted so badly to make his girl her favorite breakfast with his own two hands. But instead the only thing he had ended up making was a mess. And a gigantic one at that.

At least he knew when to finally admit defeat. A quick phone call to Fred's favorite restaurant and his girl would have the breakfast of her dreams. For a minute he smiled despite his surroundings. There it was again. Those two words. His girl. But first he had to get the food to her. He gave himself a quick mental shake before he grabbed his keys and walked out of the door without once looking back at the mess he was leaving behind.

Twenty minutes later he was inside of the Hyperion and ready to see Fred but before he finally lifted the tray, Gunn checked it for the third time to make sure he hadn't forgotten anything. Five pancakes, fluffy and cooked to perfection, six hot link sausages, still sizzling, and three scrambled eggs. Something was missing. He stared at the tray of food willing himself to remember. Damn! He'd almost forgotten the orange juice. Within moments he had everything on the tray and carefully climbed the stairs to her bedroom. He couldn't wait to see the look on Fred's face.

He balanced the tray against the wall to help support it and used his other hand to open the door. The tray tilted and the juice almost spilled over, quickly he tried to right the tray and almost fell into the room as he overcompensated. The dreams of the entrance he'd envisioned, the tray held gently but firmly in his hands, the stunned look on Fred's face as he placed the tray filled with her favorite morning foods on her lap, all evaporated as she giggled as he stumbled through the door.

"What's all this, Charles?"

With an exaggerated flourish, he placed the tray on her lap and removed the cover. "Breakfast for my girl."

She looked down at all of her favorite foods before she finally lifted her head and stared at him. "You made me breakfast?"

"No. I tried to make you breakfast." He cringed at the thought of the mess waiting for him to clean at home. But the smile on Fred's face was worth whatever he had to face later. "But it didn't go so well. This is from that little restaurant down by the pier, the one you like so much."

As she cut through the deliciously tempting pancakes she didn't bother to tell him the only reason she liked that restaurant so much wasn't for the food but because it was there that she first realized exactly how much she loved him. With a soft smile at Gunn she popped a bite into her waiting mouth. "You went through all that trouble for me?"

Gunn shook his head. It never ceased to amaze him that Fred didn't realize exactly how special she was. "It was no trouble. Now eat. I have a big day planned."

"Really? What?"

He nodded his head. "Forget it. I'm not telling. You'll just have to wait and see. Now hurry up, girl."

With an impish smile, she tucked her hair behind her ears and began to eat with gusto.

Gunn smiled as he watched her eat more for breakfast than he had ever thought humanly possible. God, How he loved her! She was his girl teensy-weensy with a heart as big as her appetite. It was hard to believe that at one time he'd thought he wouldn't have a future. How wrong he'd been. Fred was his future. He squeezed the tiny diamond ring in his pocket, and if everything went his way today she would be his girl forever.

Awwww, who wouldn't love Gunn? What an amazing guy. I love him and I love Fred - "As she cut through the deliciously tempting pancakes she didn't bother to tell him the only reason she liked that restaurant so much wasn't for the food but because it was there that she first realized exactly how much she loved him," oh Fred! - and I love them together. This lovely fic makes me wish more than ever than things had gone their way.
