Title Sharp Focus
Author Brutti ma buoni
Rating R – this is a fic about torture , albeit not very graphic. Please be wary if this is an issue for you.
Word Count 490
Prompt 215 - Chinese mythology, the 18 levels of hell/Diyu
Characters Wesley and Faith
A/N: Set during Sanctuary, AtS season one, from which Faith's quoted dialogue is taken.

The most important thing is not to show fear.

He sometimes thinks that perhaps survival is more important. Would be more important, had he hope for it.

But he has no hope. What Wesley has is pride. He will not break. When she says, "Now, we've only done one of the five basic torture groups. We've done blunt - but that still leaves sharp, cold, hot and loud," he does not think of what hot will feel like as his skin burns away. How sharp sharp will be, as she slices through his flesh – as he bleeds.

No. He does not think of that.

Instead, he sends his mind far away. Ponders on where Faith gleaned her Grand Unified Theory of Torture. Did she have it already, before all that happened last year? Is this something that teenaged Faith spent time developing? Or perhaps it's merely the sum of her observations since she decided to throw in her lot with the side of evil. Possibly the Mayor had a little seminar on torture techniques that he ran for new staff. How sweet. Or perhaps this is what Faith has been dreaming, this past year.

His objectivity falters once, when she sits on his knee. Disturbingly close. She always was gorgeous, and he has sufficient self-knowledge now to recognise that he may have been harder on her because of his own inappropriate recognition of that.

But in his current circumstances, that twinge of desire is no more than fleeting. He goes back to his thoughts, until she finds another way in. She's playing with fire now, in the most literal sense, and he's back in the moment, unbearably.

Focus. Take your mind away from the body. Back to considering the theoretical basis of torture. Not the flames. Not the flames.

Only five basic groups of torture. Wesley supposes he should be thankful that Faith hasn't studied Diyu. If she'd got as far as the eighteen hells, she would have an awful lot more to play with. He will be spared, today, the boiling cauldron or the grinding hell. Dismemberment, hooks and gouging – well, possibly, they aren't ruled out by Faith's little plan, but he thinks he may object if she tries to stretch 'sharp' that far. Fair's fair, even when you're being tortured to death. Perhaps especially then.

Flaying is possible, within the rules. But he doubts she will be able to make blood run from all his orifices simultaneously.

Perhaps best not to mention that one. She might get ideas.

In fact, and on mature reflection, Faith's five torture groups are pretty comprehensive. Wesley comes to the conclusion that Diyu introduces rather unnecessary refinement into the identification of torture categories. Which is an interesting insight. If only he were in a position to share it with someone.

She's reaching for the blowtorch again. He seeks mental escape, and finds it elusive.

Oh God.

Wow. This is great. It has been a long time since I watched this scene but your words bring it to vivid recall. And I don't think I'll be able to watch it again without hearing your tape of Wesley's thoughts in my head.

She's playing with fire now, in the most literal sense, and he's back in the moment, unbearably.

Such good balance between the horror of the moment and Wesley, with all his inherent nerdiness and courage.

I like the way you got into Wesley's head and engaged him in a little intellectualizing about torture and the techniques that he's read about.

Whoa. This is stunning. Dark and gutwrenching and, er, inappropriately hot.
Pitch-perfect Wesley.

But he has no hope. What Wesley has is pride. He will not break.

This is... Possibly the best summation of Wesley in the history of ever. Dead.
