Date: 2007-07-17 06:21 pm (UTC)Re: voting rules
Date: 2007-07-17 06:26 pm (UTC)Second, there are several reasons why we do the voting the way that we do. The first (but not most important) is that this is how most challenge communities on Livejournal conduct themselves. I am in 20 challenge comms alone and in each of them, you are not allowed to vote for yourself.
A large reason for this is because everyone thinks that their work is more awesome than anyone else's. That is just human nature. Most of the time, the people who vote are the people who have contributed things. Considering we allow 10 enteries, if each participant vote for just their work, we would never have any winners. I can tell you that we rarely get votes from people who haven't participated for the week. It is usually always participants.
While you said there is "clearly an entry that is superior" that is a matter of opinion. As I said, most people think that their stuff is the best. If you think that your entry for the week is the best, someone might feel it is the worst. As a participant, it is next to impossible to be objective in judging your own work. If your work is truly superior, the other people of this community will vote for it without a participant having to vote for themselves. There has not been one winner yet, in all these weeks, that did not deserve it. And a lot of people who won are not on my flist or friends with me so I am not just saying that. The best usually gets recognized in this community regardless.
Sarah and I are open for suggestions, hence the idea survey but the voting is one thing that we stand firm on. People are not allowed to vote on their own work, the mods are not allowed to vote or be voted upon. This is one thing that will not change. While this is a "community", it is also a contest. A contest that has rules. We have been running for nearly 23 weeks with over 1000 entries so I think we are doing something right. I also think you will be hard pressed to find another challenge community out there that allows people to vote for themselves. However, if you feel that strongly about it, this might not be the place for you as Sarah and I made this one of our first rules and it is not up for debate.
I hope you can understand where we are coming from. Again, as the owners of this community, we do have the final say. We let people give their opinions on so many other aspects of the community but this is one thing we won't budge on.
Re: voting rules
Date: 2007-07-17 09:11 pm (UTC)It's pretty irrelevant to me, personally, as I rarely keep up with the prompts well enough to get something in before there is a new prompt. LOL I was thinking more along the lines of a close contest for first place and a writer losing by one vote because he/she couldn't vote for his/her own fic when it was really worthy. It wasn't a personal complaint at all, I just don't recall seeing any other communities that were quite so adamant about it and I thought I'd mention it.
I agree that there have been very few winners that weren't genuinely deserving - the overall quality of the entries is always very high - I just know that when I am voting in communities I always look for the one I feel is the very best. More often than not, it is not mine and that's the way I vote. But once in a very great while, I really like my entry and am not knocked out by any of the others and it is nice to have the freedom to vote for yourself.
But, as I said, it's not really a complaint, just a suggestion. I doesn't matter to me, personally, one way or the other.
