Title A Blind Eye
Author Bruttimabuoni
Rating PG
Word Count 400
Prompt 144 (Lovers Walk)
Characters/Pairing (if any) Giles, ensemble
Watcher’s Diary, week commencing 23 November 1998
I have returned from my retreat to find the Slayer and her friends in some disarray, which I admit I do not as yet fully understand. Must hold on to the sense of calm, serenity and peace that I achieved on retreat, otherwise will have been futile waste to go camping and I could have slept in my own bed without the inconvenience of intrusive wildlife and poisonous plants. (Though the retreat was of course a splendid success.)
I noted before leaving that Miss Summers’ SAT scores (Scholastic Aptitude Test, I believe, though the terminology changes. They are in any case used broadly as a university entrance examination in the United States) were gratifyingly high. It is possible that she is in a position to consider an alternative career path. Miss Lehane could pursue the Slayer calling in the interim. One can now conceive of a shared burden; indeed perhaps the option of multiple Slayers arising in each generation should be seriously investigated since it is evidently a possibility – one we have never before had confirmed. I pondered this innovative proposition on my retreat but have yet to come to a decision about whether to share it with the full Council. I fear they might not be receptive to sharing the power of the Slayers more widely.
There were clearly some tensions among the young people in my absence. I confess I have not fully investigated the detail but there appears to have been some reshuffling of the pack of teenage relationships (or perhaps only ruffling, as the pre-existing pairings remain germane), with unfortunate consequences. No doubt it will all come out in the wash. All concerned seem remarkably subdued. Though with Daniel Osbourne, I admit it is rather hard to be certain of that. Buffy herself is unusually silent and reflective, perhaps pondering her career choices.
Of wider note, and the subject of a fuller, separate circular to all duty Watchers, it appears that William the Bloody (continuing to operate under the sobriquet “Spike”) has separated from his paramour Drusilla. He made a fleeting visit to Sunnydale in which heapparently formed a fleeting alliance with the Slayer did no significant harm. Whether severally they will do more or less damage than during their hundred-year partnership of blood remains to be seen and will doubtless be the subject of much Council study in the coming months.

I especially liked:
"I confess I have not fully investigated the detail but there appears to have been some reshuffling of the pack of teenage relationships (or perhaps only ruffling, as the pre-existing pairings remain germane), with unfortunate consequences."
and this totally rocks:
"William the Bloody (continuing to operate under the sobriquet “Spike”) has separated from his paramour Drusilla. He made a fleeting visit to Sunnydale in which he apparently formed a fleeting alliance with the Slayer did no significant harm. Whether severally they will do more or less damage than during their hundred-year partnership of blood remains to be seen and will doubtless be the subject of much Council study in the coming months."

This fic really made me think about Giles, and I think that's definitely a good thing.
